The
coastline between Fethiye and Antalya is the most rugged section of Turkey's Mediterranean
shore, with the Taurus Mountains rising sharply to 3000-meter(9840-foot) peaks
from the sea.
A coast road was first built in this difficult terrain in 1980,
and the region is in the early stages of touristic development. Several small
towns - Fethiye, Gelemis, Kalkan, Demre, Kemer, Kas, Finike, and Kumluca among
them offer accomodation.
The Lycians, an ancient people, inhabited this region
until Roman times. They were reowned for thier rock-carved tombs which still dot
the landscape of lycia to picturesque effect. Some 20 ruined Lycian cities are
set in spectacular locations. |
