On a Whim

At On a Whim, we bring contemporary art into unexpected spaces, making it part of everyday life. By curating exhibitions in dynamic, public, and welcoming environments, we invite new audiences to engage with art beyond the traditional gallery setting. In collaboration with Corendon Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, we are launching a series of exhibitions that turn the hotel into a space for artistic exploration and dialogue.

On a Whim x Corendon

Art has the power to transform spaces and connect people. On a Whim brings art to dynamic locations where people gather, stay, and seek inspiration. Corendon Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel is one such place—a lively hub with 680 rooms and facilities such as a skybar, cinema, swimming pool, and even a Boeing 747 in the garden. Every day, thousands of people pass through, from tourists and business travelers to local residents. This makes the hotel the perfect setting not only to showcase art but to create an experience around it.

Every three months, a new exhibition will be presented, each time offering fresh artistic perspectives on this central question. Through a multidisciplinary selection of contemporary artists, we showcase diverse viewpoints on what “Dutch culture” means—on a personal, communal, and societal level. By placing art in direct conversation with its surroundings and its audience, we aim to create a space where questions are raised, stories are shared, and new perspectives emerge.

Who Gets to Define “Dutch” Culture?

For this exhibition series, we explore a thought-provoking question: Who gets to define what Dutch culture is? Is there such a thing as a universal Dutch identity, or is it an ever-evolving and layered concept? In a country shaped by global influences, this exhibition challenges us to reflect on identity, tradition, and the shifting nature of cultural definitions. The exhibition runs from April 10 to July 10, 2025.

1

Tom van Veen (NL, 1995)

Tom van Veen’s work spans multiple disciplines, including performance, painting, sculpture, narrative texts, and set design. Through his interplay of colors, he creates an intense light that absorbs everything while simultaneously softening certain tones. He describes his practice as rooted in the theatrical nature of tragedy, focusing on themes of contemporary icons, collective memory, and the intricate connections between them.

Rebecka Hultman (SE, 1995)

Rebecka Hultman is an artist and designer based in Amsterdam. Her work exists at the intersection of physical and digital objects, often analyzed through humor and absurdity. From 3D modeling to site-specific installations, her practice is driven by a deep fascination with nostalgia and memory. This allows her to explore memorabilia, imagination, and our perception of reality while simultaneously reflecting on and deconstructing ideas of adulthood and femininity.

Amber Schaafsma (NL, 1998)

Amber Schaafsma’s work explores the poetic elements of everyday life, capturing fleeting yet memorable moments. Using painting, video, and audio, she creates atmospheric depictions of deserted but familiar spaces—bars, cinemas, and candle-lit tables. Her paintings often take shape on irregularly sized wood panels, where the grain subtly emerges through the layers of paint.
