On A Whim – Young Photographers Exhibit at Corendon Hotel
It seems like reality – but it never quite is. The work of photographers Tessa van den Boogaard, Lonneke van der Palen, and Elizabeth Barrette challenges viewers to see the extraordinary in the everyday. These three young photographers are showcasing their work in the lobby of the Corendon Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Hotel in Badhoevedorp. Curated by Rana Ayvaz, the exhibition is free to visit and will be on display from October 31 to January 31, 2025.
Art and Corendon
On the initiative of CEO and former Secretary of State for Culture, Gunay Uslu, Corendon aims to give local artists the opportunity to showcase their work to an unexpected audience. This allows them to engage in dialogue with guests staying at the hotel or attending a conference.
Snapshots of the Everyday World
The works of the photographers are clearly distinct from each other, yet in their diversity, they come together in a remarkably harmonious way. The themes are intimate, playful, dreamlike—fleeting yet timeless. They touch on the essence of Dutch life, capturing moments of our everyday world through the lens of these three talented artists.
Three Photographers
Elizabeth Barrette’s (1993) work focuses on the beauty and depth found in the ordinary. Driven by a desire to create spaces and moments of calm in a fast-paced world, she invites viewers to pause and reflect. With a keen eye for detail and a minimalist approach, she captures the subtle interplay of light and shadow, revealing elegance in simplicity.
A desire to capture unnoticed details in her surroundings is one of the main motivations for Tessa van den Boogaard (1991). For her, these details are just as important as the bigger picture – sometimes even more so. She is continuously drawn to graphic compositions and abstract fragments in her environment. By highlighting unnoticed details in a minimalistic and aesthetic way, she seeks to offer new perspectives and reveal the beauty of the everyday.
Lonneke van der Palen (1985) observes everything with the same keen interest. Her work reminds us that everything around us is shaped, both by nature and by human hands. How all these things gain form and meaning in our lives on this planet, and the actions associated with them, form the basis for her photography. In addition to her personal work, she photographs for various fashion houses and teaches at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK). She recently had her first solo exhibition at Museum Jan in Amstelveen, and a special publication of her work has been released, titled Lemons Gazing at Mount Etna.
